When you think of two-year-old racehorses in Australia, you immediately think of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott. Their current success this season has been somewhat of a juggernaut operation, with horses winning weekend after weekend. How are they able to keep picking successful horses time after time and what goes into their process when at the sales?
One of the main features that Gai and Adrian look for when choosing horses at the sales goes back to the broodmare sire, this method, alongside others, has proven to be a winning formula when ticking all the boxes for each particular yearling.
More often than not, champion dam sire lines are the key when looking at pedigrees. For example, Espionage who won last year’s Breeder’s Plate, is out of a Street Cry mare (In Times Of War) Street Cry was a time-honoured champion sire who himself had sired many great horses: Street Boss, Winx, Zenyatta just to name a few.
Another example of this is Straight Charge’s dam (Matryoshka) she is by another champion sire in I Am Invincible, who has sired more than 60 individual stakes winners. Straight Charge is another early type who won the Silver Slipper and is an example of Gai and Adrian’s method into practice.
Finally, Fully Lit another two-year-old of Gai and Adrian’s on the path to the Golden Slipper, is out of Snitzel mare (Sunlit) Fully Lit has won both of his two starts, more recently being the $2,033,000 Inglis Millennium. Snitzel needs no introduction having currently sired over 100 individual stakes winners, 19 of those being Group 1 winners.
