As we near the end of the 2022/2023 season we will look back at some of the highlight two-year-olds. We will take a look at some key features in regard to pedigree, training, and ability. We will also look at the ones we suspect will continue to improve into their three-year-old year.

Keeping It In the Family

We have had some exciting prospects this season with a few remaining unbeaten heading into their Spring campaigns.

Ozzmosis

Ozzmosis is a colt by Zoustar out of No More Tears NZ (Darci Brahma) trained by Bjorn Baker. He is raced by Darby Racing and has had stakes recently acquired by Newgate and China Horse Club. He was a $220,000 purchase at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale. While he has only had a short career so far he is currently unbeaten in his two starts. Prior to the commencement of his career, he also had 3 trials in which he also remains unbeaten.

He is a well-bred colt being by champion sire Zoustar who was a Group 1 winner at two and three years old. Zoustar had won races spanning from 1100m up to 1600m. He was unbeaten during his two-year-old season, winning races like the Group 1 Sires Produce. Ozzmosis’ Dam had a long career retiring as a five-year-old. She had raced from 1100m-1600m with her wins/placings coming between 1200m-1400m. This pairing suggests Ozzmosis should continue to improve with maturity and possibly a bit further in his races.

Darby Racing has had great success with their two-year-olds, with shares available in yearlings ready to start their two-year-old season. Check out the Marketplace to view current listings

The Novelist

The Novelist is a colt by two-year-old winner Written By. He is out the Snitzel mare Sunlit. Trained by top two-year-old trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott and raced by Tricolours, specifically an all-ladies group. He is unbeaten having won two from two earlier in the season. His two wins include a 5-length maiden win and a Group 3 win in the B.J Mclachlan. Unfortunately, an injury setback saw him miss the Autumn Carnival but he has since recovered and has commenced training.

His stallion Written By was champion two year old of his generation. He won top two-year-old races such as the Group 1 Blue Diamond and the Group 3 Pago Pago Stakes. The Novelist’s dam Sunlit is by a champion sire in Snitzel and is also a winner of two starts over the sprint distance.

The Novelist is currently back in work from his extended spell and it’s full steam ahead for the upcoming season. If he can replicate what he has shown early on there is no doubt his ownership group will have an exciting Spring Carnival. Tricolours have had a successful season with horses such as Gin Martini and Party For One adding more wins to their name. Tricolours currently have shares available in yearlings which you can find on our Ownership Marketplace.

Libertad

Libertad is another unbeaten colt by Russian Revolution out of the Charge Forward mare Electric Charge.  Trained by Annabel Neasham and raced in the Trilogy colours. Originally sold as a yearling for $40,000 before reselling in the Ready2Run Sale for $210,000. He has won both his two starts one of them being the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes.

He is by a fast sire in Russian Revolution who won at two, three, and four years old. He really came into his own during his three-year-old season winning Group 1, 2, and 3. He then went on to win the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate at four years old. The dam Electric Charge has won over the spring distance but has also placed up to 1550m as a three-year-old. She has also had some decent progeny in fillies Kinetic and Surething To Win.

This pairing suggests this colt should be improving as he matures. With both parents winning as older horses and being trained by Group 1 winning trainer Annabel Neasham, the future looks very bright for this colt. Annabel currently has some well-bred yearlings listed on our Ownership Marketplace.

The Spring Carnival is always an exciting time with the new lot of two-year-olds and improving older horses. We can’t wait to follow these horses in their campaigns in the new season.
