For most people, the dream of owning a racehorse can seem a little farfetched. However, with the help of syndication companies, this dream can become a reality.

Syndication is rapidly becoming a favourable method when trying to enter the world of racehorse ownership.

We interviewed Jason Micallef, owner and founder of Monarch Racing Syndications, to see how his company differs from others with a modern approach to racehorse ownership. He, along with his wife Tahlia, are the co-founders who share a love and passion for horses.

Have you always had a love of horses?

“Always! Ever since Tahlia and I were kids we have been on the back of a horse in some way shape or form. Racing has been in our family since my grandfather in the Harness Racing Industry. For us we love racing and sharing our passion with our clients has been amazing.”

What makes your syndication group different from the more mainstream companies?

“Our team, our attention to detail and creativity to be against the grain. We are a fresh new take on the industry with amazing communication, event experiences & cool merch. Everything is about our clients and being boutique allows us a hands-on approach with all our clients regardless of the percentage. We are here for a good time & to win races, this business is not for us to be millionaires its purely a passion project and I believe no other syndicator can say that.”

Have you found it difficult to break into the market given that you’re younger in comparison to most syndicators?

“Absolutely, we have come in at a time when interest rates have never been higher with no client base. I don’t know if anyone is working harder in the industry to build a foundation. We believe in our team and we trust the process, over the next 12-24 months our hard work will be rewarded and we welcome any new clients to join our team to support us and join us on the journey.”

What do you normally look for when purchasing a yearling?

“Our process is straightforward, we choose type over pedigree, we want athletes. In our opinion, we have one of the best bloodstock agents in the world Paul Moroney who has selected 39 individual G1 winners, our trainers must love our purchases and the judge to finalize our purchases is our trusted vet Ruth from Pinnacle Equine. We never buy horses with issues from the get-go, giving us every opportunity to have a successful racing career in our colours. We trust our process.”

From the available yearlings, you have on Stridyl’s Ownership Marketplace, which is your favourite and why?

“The Ole Kirk x October Colt, I love a David vs Goliath story and this cheap horse has some deep famous bloodlines and is a true tradesman of a horse. He is beautiful type and will run. He could be our horse to prove you don’t always have to pay top dollar for a quality animal.”

Monarch Racing Syndications have only been operating for less than a year, but they’ve already succeeded with their horses. For example, Bo Katan (Impending x Sandida) has only had 6 starts for 2 wins and 2 placings.

A more recent purchase of ex-Godolphin galloper Bacchanalia is an exciting prospect for the spring. He has already earned $563,325 in prize money and will be in training with Group One-winning trainer, Richard Litt.

Another interesting 2-year-old purchase is Regina D’oro (Exceed And Excel x Athens) Her dam Athens is out of the blue hen Godolphin mare Retsina, who produced stakes winners Vilana, Athiri and Savatiano to name a few. She will be in training with Simon Zahra and certainly has the pedigree to be successful.
