This week we sit down with Group 1 winning jockey Rachel King. Rachel started her career in the saddle as an amateur riding point to points in the UK and Ireland. She knew quickly that she wanted more and took out her apprenticeship on the flat. However, it wasn’t the right time or place so she paused her riding career while heading to Australia for a working holiday. Fast forward a few years and she is now the first female to ride a Sydney Cup, a Group 1 winning jockey with supporters such as Gai Waterhouse, Godolphin, and Mark Newham. If Rachel’s story gives you anything, it’s the will to never to give up.
In this episode, we accompany the Australian thoroughbred auction houses of Magic Millions and William Inglis as they inspect nearly 10,000 yearlings entered by the stud farms for their 2023 sales season.
In celebration of #BlackHistoryMonth, Leading The Way series 2 continues as we visit Kendrick Carmouche. Carmouche discusses his career in the saddle, his journey as a jockey and reflects upon the history of African-American jockeys in US horse racing.
An inspirational group making a real difference in the Compton community, changing and in some case saving lives, the group was set up by 10 childhood friends on a mission to challenge stereotypes around African-Americans and horseback riding.
